      Description

Nicola reported today a bug with the Terrier evaluation tool. For some queries, the system reports an MAP of 2 (yes 2) at precision @1. It appears that it is a resetting problem when multiple evaluation files are used.

Description Nicola reported today a bug (yet again) with the Terrier evaluation tool. For some queries, the system reports an MAP of 2 (yes 2) at precision @1. It appears that it is a resetting problem when multiple evaluation files are used. This is problematic. I know that you use the original trec_eval, however those Terrier users who assume that the evaluation package tool is fine surely expect better. It might completely misleadtheir evaluation/conclusions. For a a so-called 'research platform', this is a major issue.

I knew that this part of the system is a mine (but so are the query expansion, indexing, etc. parts judging by all these TREC bugs this year). However, the evaluation package has to improve up to a reasonable state. An MAP> 1 is ludicrous.
